Rainbows, Tourist, and the One Month Mark!

This week marks the official One Month mark for me!
That's right, I have been living in Aalborg for one month! It seems like just yesterday I was at the airport saying good-bye to my parents.
Crazy how fast time flies by when you are having fun!

Much like my friends back home going through midterms I am also as the mid point for my semester. However, I don't have any papers to write or tests to take. With the school system being different here, I am officially half done with my classes! Next, comes the project! Not sure what I'll be doing or with what people, but I think it will be good!

On Friday the AIK had an open bar with karaoke! It was a lot of fun, for what I was able to attend! I had a Skype date with Jami that lasted for about two hours! She got to hear lots of singing! It was really fun to be able to talk and every now and then get interrupted by a great song that we would both start singing and dancing along with! Definitely added to the conversation! After skyping with Jami, I headed out and got roped into singing a few songs as well. I'll admit it, I was part of the Barbie Girl song and for some reason was given a microphone during Thrift Shop. I'm not sure why.
After that died down a bit a few of us headed to the street for some dancing! It was definitely packed! Claustrophobia started to set in so Daniela (Austria) and I decided to leave early. We were told the wrong time for the bus so we ended up waiting in the McDonald's for an hour and a half! It's crazy how many people come in and out of there, lots of people watching! Haha!

Saturday was equally as good! A few of us headed into town to get train tickets and a WildCard pass. The WildCard is a very glorious invention. 50% off tickets on Monday-Thursday and Saturday and 25% off Friday and Sunday trips! Makes train travel seem so much more affordable!
From there Erica, Tara and I stayed in town for a bit. We were going to talk to phone companies about prices and ended up shopping instead! It was really fun to just look around and try and compare shops here to the brands back home!

On Sunday about ten of us headed to Aarhus for the day! We left bright and early at 8:10am! The trip consisted of Erica, Tara, Ali and Tiff (Australia), Daniela (Austria), Matthieu (France), Juan (Spain), and Ran and one of her friends (Japan), and myself! A very large group of tourist! It was wonderful!
We first walked around the city center before deciding to go to Den Gamle By!
The Tourist!

Den Gamle By is an old fashioned town within Aarhus that has old buildings brought in from all around Denmark. In essence, it's like the Frontier Village in Jamestown, but it has a lot more buildings! It was really cool! We were able to go into most of the buildings and look around.

Part of Den Gamle By, there were so many different buildings like this all around. Each one was marked where it was from, what it was used for, and when it was built and moved. The river definitely helped to make it look more like a small town within Aarhus!

The more 'modern' part of Den Gamle By. This featured an electronic shop, radio station, and travel agent. Just across the street from there is were they are constructing the next.

Tiff and I in Den Gamle By.

From there we stopped and got food at McDonald's. I'm slightly ashamed to say I went to a McDonald's while in Europe, but I survived!

Next we decided to go to ARoS Kunstmuseum. A modern art museum in Aarhus. Very cool! There were many different levels with different exhibits on each floor. We slightly jumped around to find the 'cool' things! The first floor we stopped on have very modern art. We actually ended up seeing a few of Michael Kvium's pieces. They were as interesting as his "Real Monsters" exhibit I saw last week! Seeing some of the other art pieces gave me hope that with my very limited art skills, I too could be considered good!
The next floor was not so modern. Lots of old paintings. Very pretty and intricate, but they didn't leave you wondering what they were about, as the more modern stuff did.
Next we went all the way up to the roof top to see Olafur Eliasson's 'Your Rainbow Panorama'. It was the coolest thing I have seen. It's a giant walkway on the roof of the museum. It's a giant circle with the glass different colors of the rainbow. It was an incredible view of Aarhus! And it was colorful!

The blue part! Tara and Ran taking a picture!

Moving to the green and yellow section!

Looking through the orange to the other side where it's blue.

A picture of me in the blue and red section. It was a great view. of Aarhus!

From there we went down to find the canon! As part of an exhibit, there was a canon that went off so many times an hour shooting red wax at a white wall.

It was an interesting sight to see. The room filled up with a lot of people! A trained employee came in, loaded the canon, positioned it, and let it go, and then proceeded to leave without saying a word. Nothing. Not a sigh or a smile. I guess the word to use to explain this exhibit is 'interesting'. I've never been to an exhibit where something is being fired off or someone is actually a part of it. None the less, it was good.

On the same floor we saw lots of modern art, including the Boy. A giant statue of a boy. Crouched down and staring at you. Very lifelike and creepy at the same time. We also went down to an exhibit called The Nine Spaces and it featured everything from a room of mirrors to a black room with five screens playing scenes from underwater to stars in the night sky. Another room was set up like something from the 70s and lastly an E.T. statue with the movie playing on the sheet it was holding up. That was definitely not my favorite.

Overall, the museum was really cool! I saw a lot of things that I'm sure I would never get a chance to see else where. I am starting to gain a new perspective on art. I think I am finally understanding art. It only took me 21 years and a trip to Denmark to find it!

From there we decided to call it a day. We got to see and experience a lot. Aarhus is definitely a place to visit if you ever come to Denmark!

Monday was a rather good day. It started off with an 8:15 Psychology class and ended with a Skype session with my mom to wish her a Happy Birthday! It was good to see her and talk to her!

Here's to five more months of awesome adventures with awesome people!
